It’s Not You, It’s Me | MixTape Week #5 – 02.20.2022

Watching people make relationship decisions that actually undermine their relationships.

Relationship Myth.

1. The Right Person Myth:

  • Once you meet the right person, everything will be all right.

2. The Promise Myth:

  • A promise replaces the need for preparation.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
– John 15:12

Avoiding Groundhog Date.

How to Date in a Different Direction.

Because direction, not your intention, determines your destination.

We learn from our mistakes in the areas that matter least.

We repeat our mistakes in the areas that matter most.

3. The Experience Myth.

  • Experience will make me wiser.
  • Experience will make me wiser older.
  • Evaluated experience makes you wiser.

4. The Know-Better Myth.

  • Since I know better, I’ll do better.
  • Know better does not equal Do better.

5. The Time Myth.

  • Time is against me.
  • Time is your friend.

In time you’ll be able to own things you can’t own now.

You can’t blame your way into a better future.

Blame allows you to smuggle your issues into your own future.

Gentile, pagan, idol-worshipping, slave-owning, might-makes-right culture.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters…
– Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy
– Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.
– Romans 12:1

Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world…
– Romans 12:2

Do not be formed according to a pattern or a mold.

Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed
– Romans 12:2

Allow yourself to be transformed.

Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
– Romans 12:2

What happens if you put on the new before taking off the old?
The new peels off.

Renewal takes time.
Time is your friend.

Then you will be able to test and approve
– Romans 12:2

Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is…
– Romans 12:2

We are far more inclined to do what makes sense than what we are merely told to do.

Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.
– Romans 12:2

Regret and resolve are not enough.

If you think the way you’ve always thought you’ll do the things you’ve always done.

Lethal Assumptions:

  1. Once I find the right person, everything will be all right.
  2. My situation is unique.
  3. It may not be right, but it makes me happy, and God wants me to be happy.
  4. Sex will solve it.

Take some time off.

If you don’t want the next time to be like the last time, do something different in the meantime.

“You’re becoming the person that the person you’re looking for is looking for.”
