Wilderness | Week 2 | September 17th, 2023

“Be careful—watch out for attacks from Satan, your great enemy. He prowls around like a
hungry, roaring lion, looking for some victim to tear apart.”
– 1 Peter 5:8

“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the
wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days. And
when they were ended, He was hungry.”
– Luke 4:1-2

God uses the wilderness to humble us, to test us and to teach us.

“For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride
of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
– 1 John 2:16

“The devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become
bread.” (Desires of the flesh)
– Luke 4:3

And the devil took Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and
said to Him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I
give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” (Desires of the eyes)
– Luke 4:5-7

And he took Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him, “If you
are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels
concerning you, to guard you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot
against a stone.’” (Pride of life)
– Luke 4:9-11

“The truth is the beginning of our freedom.”

How to Replace a Lie with the Truth:
1. Identify the Root of the Lie.

“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the
wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.
– Luke 4:1-2

“ Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
– Psalm 139:23-24

2. Search God’s Word for His Truth.

  • And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’
  • And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you
    serve.’”
  • And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

3. Pull Out the Lie and Replace it with the Truth.

“I no longer believe that lie, I believe God’s truth, which is __________!”

“The LORD is your mighty defender, perfect and just in all his ways; Your God is
faithful and true; He does what is right and fair.”
– Deuteronomy 32:4
